Your mouth is the front door to your body – oral health is connected to your overall health and wellbeing.
This world mental health day lets think about your mind mouth connection.
When we we’re struggling mentally, looking after our mouths can feel harder.
Anxiety, depression, exhaustion, feeling low or overwhelmed can make daily routines — including toothbrushing — feel like a mountain to climb. Medications that help our mood can cause dry mouth which can increase the risk of plaque build-up, bleeding gums, tooth decay, bad breath and trauma to soft tissues.
When our mouths aren’t healthy, it can affect how we feel.
Toothache, missing teeth, difficulty eating or speaking, and worries about how our smile looks can affect confidence, social connections and quality of life.
Research has found associations between oral health-related quality of life, anxiety and depression. The relationship is straightforward, and it doesn’t mean one automatically causes the other. But it does remind us that oral health is about more than teeth.
What can we do?
- Be kind to yourself. If you’re finding things difficult, start with one small, manageable step.
- Keep it simple. Aim to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. If a full routine feels overwhelming, doing what you can is a positive start — build from that.
- Give your mouth some care. Sip water regularly, especially if your mouth feels dry. Consider specialist dry mouth products – we offer a range at growingsmiles.co.uk
- Ask for help. If you’re worried about your mouth, teeth or gums, or you’re finding dental care difficult because of anxiety, tell your dental team. Growing Smiles can help offer support, tailoring advice to your individual needs.
- Listen to other’s experiences. This year’s #WorldMentalHealthDay theme calls for real voices to be heard and for listening to lead to meaningful change.
