Children's Toothbrushes

Toothbrushing should start as soon as the first tooth appears in the mouth – around 6 months of age. This is a job for a grown up. Little ones don’t have the manual dexterity to manipulate children’s toothbrushes well enough to clean all surfaces of teeth.

When the first tooth appears, use a toothpaste with at least 1000 ppm fluoride. Use a smear on a dry soft brush to clean all surfaces. Don’t worry about rinsing the paste away. Toothbrushing is the cornerstone of children’s oral hygiene but it is only one part of  good oral health care. A healthy diet, controlling sugar frequency and amount and visiting the dentist are important.

All children should have their first dental check up by their first birthday. Even if the dentist can’t get to see in your child’s mouth it is a great opportunity to familiarise them with the environment, get oral care advice from the dental team and identify your ‘dental home’.
