Dry mouth, oral dryness or xerostomia results from reduced or no saliva flow. The salivary glands in your mouth don’t make enough saliva to keep your mouth moist. Dry mouth is not a disease, but can be a symptom of various medical conditions, a side effect of cancer treatments or medications. It can also be caused by dehydration.

We often describe saliva as your secret helper in the mouth. It works away in the background unnoticed until it’s not there. The cause can range from dehydration to medications or cancer treatment. For some it is short lived and inconvenient, for others it has a life long impact which may affect eating, speaking and quality of life. You may find your gums bleed or you develop cavities where you didn’t have any problems in the recent past.
