Prodentis has been shown to help  prevent both tooth decay and gum disease. L.reuteri prodentis is able to provide a multistrain L.reuteri probiotic  dose with a consistent potency of 200 million active micro organisms. Taken as a slowly melting lozenge once a day after brushing and cleaning between teeth/flossing, ensures  consistent exposure to L.reuteri on a daily basis. Gum disease is common and can often causes problems, especially  in the  elderly, diabetics, pregnant women, when taking certain medication and in those who smoke. Gum disease is related to the  plaque biofilm buildup around the crevice where teeth and gum meet and how your body responds to the bacteria that live in this plaque biofilm. The plaque biofilm needs to be removed regularly and effectively, otherwise they will harden into tartar which can only be removed by your dental team.

HEALTHY GUMS DON’T BLEED.

ProDentis lozenges is a dietary supplement containing Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis has been tested in a number of clinical studies (see below) and proven effective and safe for both adults and children. Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis is specifically formulated to restore the oral microbiota in a natural, fast and simple way. It is the world’s most studied probiotic in oral health.

Because Lactobacillus reuteri naturally occurs in the human body it is uniquely adapted to humans.

The benefits of Probiotics in the treatment and management of people with gum (periodontal) disease is evidenced in the scientific literature as a adjunct to clinical treatment. See below for references

ProDentis can be used by patients who are at high risk of gum problems: the elderly, diabetics, pregnant women, patients with osteoporosis, patients with braces, certain medications and smokers.

Bacterial balance

The human body cooperates with bacteria and the mouth is no exception (you may have heard about the microbiome of the gut). There are more than 700 types of bacteria that live in the mouth. Some of these can protect the mouth and some can cause gum problems. When the balance of these good and bad bacteria is disrupted e.g. inadequate oral hygiene, stress, poor diet, then the ‘bad’ bacteria gain the upper hand, causing gum inflammation  – you may notice bleeding when brushing or flossing.   Healthy gums are pink, firm and fit tightly around each tooth. Signs of gum problems are red, sore and bleeding gums. Bad breath can also be a sign of gum problems. If you smoke you may not realise you have gum disease. Smoking restricts the blood supply to the gums so many smokers are unaware of their gum problem thinking because they don’t have any bleeding all is well. It is important to visit your dentist regularly so they can check your gums and provide you with advise and treatment if necessary. If you are interesting in quitting you can find help at https://www.nhs.uk/smokefree

How it works – Supplementation with Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis affects the oral microbiota locally by competing for binding sites and nutrients with pathogenic bacteria. In addition, Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis produces reuterin which directly inhibits growth of pathogenic bacteria. Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis does not only suppress the emergence of endogenous pathogens and prevent the superinfection with exogenous pathogens, but might also protect the host by stimulating the immune system, which is done by modulating the inflammatory process via T cells and cytokines. From a therapeutic perspective, it is important that probiotics are ingested daily since Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis does not colonize the oral cavity or digestive tract permanently.

A systematic review showed that L. reuteri Prodentis was the only probiotic effective in patients with chronic periodontitis. According to the authors the results are similar to those of other adjuncts to treatment of periodontitis, such as systemic antibiotics. J Clin Periodontol. 2016.

Conclusion
“The present randomized controlled trial confirms the plaque inhibition, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects of L. reuteri Prodentis. L. reuteri Prodentis probiotic can be recommended during non-surgical therapy and the maintenance phase of periodontal treatment. Considering the beneficial effects of probiotics, this therapy could serve as a useful adjunct or alternative to periodontal treatment when SRP might be contraindicated. Further studies are required in this direction”

I’ve been using the lozenges for a week now and have already noticed a difference. I’m in my 60s and have had minor gum inflammation for years, despite regular visits to my dentist and hygienist. I think these probiotics may be the answer!
